This Sonata was composed for Frederick Thurston (1901-1954) late in the life of the distinguished clarinettist. In collaboration with Eric Harrison he gave the first performance during a BBC Third Programme broadcast on 27th January 1948. Boosey & Hawkekes published the Sonata in 1954, with the solo part for clarinet in Bb. The present reprinted edition (1983) restores the solo part for clarinet in A.
