Wessman, Harri: An Adventure in Ageing

A song cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano to poems by Pentti Saaritsa (with Finnish text). Wessman hit on the idea of composing this work after an inspiring conversation with Saaritsa in 1994. The themes of the poems deal with ageing, and as the seventh poem puts it, "The adventure in ageing has begun. I think perhaps I did after all prefer the adventures of youth." The work was commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company and was premiered in 1996.
