for Violin, Cello, and Piano

Eric Ewazen has explored many combinations of instrumental colors in his piano trios (Horn, Violin, and Piano; Clarinet, Viola, and Piano; Trumpet, Cello, and Piano; and more) to celebrated results. Naturally, his treatment of the classic piano trio scoring is not something performers will want to miss! Composed for the Ahn Trio—who have recorded Ewazen’s The Diamond World for piano trio and drum set (also written for them)—this trio is a substantial, sunny, and enthusiastic work, full of rhythmic verve and candid tunefulness. Textures ranging from heavy to shimmering keep the musical surface fresh and unpredictable, while the composer’s deft handling of classical forms creates a subtle, unbroken thread that carries the listener from beginning to end.
