Chen, Yi: Spring in Dresden
Chen Yi describes her violin concerto SPRING IN DRESDEN as an American commemoration of the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche, which was destroyed by American and British forces during World War II. Full of energy and excitement, the virtuosic solo line is accompanied by an ever moving and developing orchestra backdrop. According to the composer, rests inserted between long and short phrases evoke the feeling of negative space in Chinese painting, and sliding tones heard throughout are an application of erhu technique to Western instruments. Orchestra score and parts are available on rental (116-41963).
