Lewis, George: Breakout

Written for the New Gates Trio and premiered in 2020 by the ensemble on the ‘France Musique’ program of Radio France, Breakout by George Lewis is one of many ‘sonic postcards’ composed for the threesome. Less than a minute in duration, the composer fills his minimum space with maximum music that escapes the boundaries of its 45-second length. Honoured with a MacArthur ‘genius’ award, Lewis is Professor of American Music at Columbia University in New York City and a pioneer in improvising AI software.
