Dieter Glave : Der freie Mann (The Free Man)
The poem "Der freie Mann" ("The Free Man") was written by Gottlieb Conrad Pfeffel (1736-1809), a text therefore from the time of the Enlightenment. The poem was first set to music by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwenke (1767-1822) and then by none other than Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) (for unison choir and piano, WoO 117). Dieter Glave presents this new setting on musicalion. In the process, Pfeffel's original ten stanzas have been reduced to six.
