The author of the text is unknown. The text was published initially in 1845 by Karl Müllenhoff.[4] Based on the results of research of the historic-critical song encyclopedia (''Liederlexikon'') ''the song has its origins in the second half of the 18th century of well-known erotic popular song Daß du mein Schätzgen bist''.

Many song books note the origins of the melody as freemasonry song known as ''Laßt uns, Ihr Brüder, Freiheit erhöhn'' which originated in 1778. The ''Liederlexikon'' traces the melody sung today from a variation movement which appeared in 1760 for harpsichord by the composer Josef Anton Steffan.
