Franz (Peter) Schubert : Ellen's Song III (Hymn to the Virgin) Arr. de Reinhard Fehling

In his first edition of the ''7 Songs'' after Walter Scott (published by Artaria in Vienna in 1826), Schubert also included the original English version of this song (only the first verse) from the poem “Lady of the lake” by Walter Scott (published in 1810). However, the composer used the German adaptation by Adam Storck for his composition. The English version, which is in use today, is a retranslation from German into English, which Theodore Baker (1851 - 1936) undertook much later; with knowledge of Scott's original but with considerable textual adaptations to Schubert's melody. The editor of this publication has attempted to return cautiously to the English original in the other two verses, following Schubert's English texting of the first verse.
