Thomas Augustine Arne : Rule Britannia (Original)
From the first edition by Henry Waylett, London 1741.
Rule, Britannia! is a patriotic song by the English composer Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778) and the lyricists James Thomson and David Mallet. It originated as the final song of the stage play Alfred, a masque from 1740.
The song is considered the "unofficial national anthem" of the United Kingdom - the official national anthem of this and several other Commonwealth countries is God Save the King - and is part of the regular repertoire of the London Last Night of the Proms, where the popular arrangement is performed by Malcolm Sargent.
