Biggs, William Hayes: A Consuming Fire

With switches to piccolo, alto flute, and English horn as well as hand-stopped notes by the pianist, the players provide a rich palette of timbres in this 9-minute work by Hayes Biggs. Its title, from a pair of texts — the New Testament and the poem To Musique by Robert Herrick — inspired Biggs in his piece that blazes though to its final glowing embers. The San Francisco Classical Voice praised its remarkable “clarity and expressivity.”
