Our Instrument of the Month June
The banjo is a plucked string instrument. The soundbox of this long-necked lute consists of a round frame made of laminated wood, which is covered with a membrane made of animal skin or plastic. The membrane is tensioned using a metal hoop and tension screws. The banjo has a long neck with frets, though in its original form it had no frets. Banjos have four to eight strings.
The banjo was developed by West African slaves who were brought to the New World. They brought narrow wooden lutes with them. The first mention of a banjo precursor in the Antilles, known as a banja and featuring a gourd body, dates back to 1687.
Initially, the banjo was a folk instrument of the rural population; there were no sheet music, and playing was learned through oral tradition. Today, the banjo is known primarily for its use in bluegrass, hillbilly, and minstrel music.
