Eugène Gigout : Prelude and Choral to "Großer Gott, wir loben Dich" arr. by Ulrich Metzner
My arrangement combines two organ pieces: E. Gigouts "Allegro giocoso" and the no. 99 from the "Album Grégorien" vol. IIb from 1895.
It thrives from forward-looking, increasing ostinato elements which become more and more dense until the chorale begins.
This makes it a strong contrast but it is precisely this tension that makes it an ideal prelude to the following late romantic accompaniment to the church song ( GL 380 ) by Max Reger.
It is the No. 10 from Reger's "30 kleine Choralvorspiele" from 1914 with the typical complex and colourful harmony of Reger.
Both pieces were shifted into the same key F major and fit thereby to the "Gotteslob" hymn book.
