Francisco Guerrero received his first musical training as a choirboy in the Seville Cathedral by his older brother Pedro (* 1520) and conductor Pedro Fernández de Castilleja. Cristóbal de Morales taught him as well. At the age of 17 he became chapel master in 1546 at the Jaén Cathedral. Before he had reached the age of 30, he had a good reputation thanks to his publications. He was elected as the chapel master of Málaga Cathedral, but in turn refused this position.
In the year 1551 he was hired as assistant chapel master Fernández de Castileja and as a choir director at Seville Cathedral. From 1574, after the death of Fernández, Guerrero received the post of chapel master there. Extensive travels through Spain and Portugal led him to the services of Emperor Maximilian II. At the wedding celebration of the Spanish King Philip II to Anne of Austria, he accompanied the Archbishop of Seville to Italy where he presented his second collection of masses to a private audience of Pope Gregory XIII.
