A native of Schlettstadt in Alsace, he was Kapellmeister and later organist at Strasbourg Cathedral from 1819. Known as a brilliant improviser, he also taught at the ''Grand Seminaire''; an activity he maintained until his death. In addition to three important concert compositions with virtuoso pedal playing, he published smaller, often non-pedal organ works, which mainly contained music for liturgical requirements as well as practice material for the student circle. In these collections he also integrated compositions by German composers, many of which were committed to this standard.
