After his musical training in Bayreuth as a violoncellist and violinist, the native of Coburg became a chamber musician at the margravial court where he composed numerous orchestral works as well as solo concertos. Later, church music became his main interest. Not yet 40 years old, he was appointed university organist at the Neustadt Church in Erlangen, where gave organ lessons to theology students. Here he wrote four collections of chorale preludes. However, in 1769 he returned to Bayreuth as court organist, where he also took over the cantorate until his death. Here, in addition to one (unfortunately lost) volume of church cantatas, he wrote a Passion and also a Christmas oratorio.
