Born around 1595, is mentioned as early as 1630 in the house register of the town of Altenburg in Thuringia as court cantor. Johann Gottfried Walther wrote in his "Musikalisches Lexicon" in 1732: "Pflug Johann was court cantor at Altenburg around the year 1644 and a composer, as an eight-part motet by him: O Herr, lehre uns bedencken, dass wir sterben müssen ec. has been seen."
"When Duchess Anna Maria moved into Altenburg Castle (1604), a new era began for Altenburg's musical life. During this time, court organists such as Georg Zöllner, Johann Christenius, Johann Pflug and Gottfried Scheidt, the brother of the famous Halle organist Samuel Scheidt, were in the service of the Altenburg court.
Under Frederick William II, the court chapel employed ten permanent musicians from 1654."
