Palmgren initially studied at the Helsinki Conservatory from 1895 to 1899, where he also met his future teacher Ferrucio Busoni. He then went to Berlin for further training, where he continued his studies with Busoni. From 1909 to 1912, he conducted the symphony orchestra of the Turku Music Society. After 1912, he traveled extensively as a concert pianist. From 1923 to 1926, he lived in the United States and taught at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. From 1927, Palmgren taught piano and composition at the Helsinki Conservatory, where he was full professor of composition from 1939 until his death. Palmgren composed 5 piano concertos and numerous miniatures for piano, including the piece “Einöde”, which is published here. In addition to these works, he wrote a number of orchestral works, as well as an opera (Daniel Hjort) and more than 200 works for choir and songs.
