Johann Christoph Friedrich Förster was born on November 30, 1693, in Bibra, Thuringia, and died on December 6, 1745, in Rudolstadt. His musical talent became apparent at an early age. At the age of 17, he became a pupil of Johann David Heinichen in Weißenfels, who taught him composition and counterpoint. In 1717, Foerster was employed as a chamber musician in the Saxe-Merseburg court chapel, where he served as concertmaster. Foerster wrote numerous works, including an opera, several sacred and secular cantatas, symphonies, chamber music and solo concertos. Most of these works are considered lost today. The present piece is a gavotte and probably part of a baroque suite for harpsichord.
