Peter Iljitsch Tchaikovsky : Symphony No.4
Andante sostenuto - Moderato con anima - Moderato assai, quasi Andante - Allegro vivo (F minor)
The symphony opens with horns and bassoons aggressively stating the first item (Fatum) in A flat. After a descending line for bassoon and bass metal wind instruments, instruments, woodwinds and trumpets unite with the highest A flat.
Accordingly it solidifies the music slowly in long, syncopated chords. Tchaikovsky unleashes the musical equivalent of the sound of the two lightning short fortissimo chords, each followed by a long pause. Suitably music fades, the woodwind instrument indirectly cites the main melody, which is itself introduced by the strings at the Moderato con anima.
(The score at this point indicates “In movimento di Valse” it is written in 9/8 ternary time signature.) The melody develops very quickly. Much later in the movement, the same A-flat is played by trumpets. This movement is marked by continuous introductions on del Motive de Fe (account of faith), the phrase in A flat, the reason it works as a separation between each section of the sonata-allegro form.
Taking about twenty minutes interpret this movement in a few performances, it is one of the longest Tchaikovsky composed.
Andantino in modo di canzona (B flat minor)
This movement is introduced with a wistful melody of a oboe. The passionate climax of the music is reminiscent of the grieving phrases that accompanied the opening movement.
Scherzo Pizzicato ostinato - Allegro (F major)
The strings play pizzicato throughout deste movement. Subsequently united with the woodwind instruments when for the most part an oboe points out the onset of the trio section. After metal wind instruments come in, playing softly and staccato. The strings and woodwinds and brass are almost the only groups that play in this movement with almost no percussion except for the timpano.
Ends gently with pizzicato strings.
Finale Allegro con fuoco (F major)
Here Tchaikovsky incorporates a famous Russian folk song “On The Field There was a Birch Tree” as a theme. In this movement an indication of the flat of the first part is roughly, partly present, with the sounds of intense lightning and added cymbals.
