Paul Siefert (1586-1666) was a student of Sweelinck's in Amsterdam, thanks to a scholarship from the Danzig (Dansk in modern-day Poland) town council. After he returned he became assistant organist in Danzig. From 1611 to 1616 he was the organist first at the church in Königsberg (modern-day Kaliningrad) and then at the Warsaw court orchestra of Sigismund III of Poland. In September 1623 he was appointed organist of the Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) in Danzig. Siefert was always in competition with his rival, the Warsaw kapellmeister Marco Scacchi, and both composers published several collections of music as part of their oneupmanship. Siefert's students include Christoph Bernhard and Andreas Neunhaber.
