Robert Schumann : Forest Dialogue, It is already late Arr. de Klaus Tewes
The original by Robert Schumann is from the Liederkreis op. 39 for one voice and piano, the text is by Joseph von Eichendorff
It is already late, it is already cold,
Why are you riding lonely through the forest?
The forest is long, you are alone,
You beautiful bride! I'll lead you home!
"Great is the deceit and cunning of men,
My heart is broken with pain,
The horn of the forest wanders here and there,
O flee! You do not know who I am."
So richly adorned are steed and wife,
So beautiful the young body,
Now I know you - God help me!
You are the witch Lorelei. -
"You know me well - from high stone
Look silently at my castle deep in the Rhine.
It's already late, it's already cold,
Never come out of this forest again."
1 Original Eichendorff: "will"
The song "Waldesgespräch" (''Forest Dialogue'') is in dialogue form. Schumann depicts the two protagonists in different musical ways: The words of the horseman are accompanied by dotted rhythms and horn fifths, the witch Lorelei initially with harp-like chords, later, when she has been recognized as a witch, with dramatic-sounding altered chords.
The trumpet parts are available in Bb and C.
