Voluntaries in 17th and 18th century England are called "Clavier" pieces (i.e. music for virginal, harpsicord, clavichord, but especially [often pedalless] organ), which can be played advantageously on all kinds of occasions. Stanley's performance pieces are mostly intended for the organ, but they often require two manuals or the register division into soprano and bass, which is popular in England (mostly for H/c1). This can be confirmed, for example, by a reference such as "Cornet", whose ''tertz''-like sound is not suitable for accompaniment in the bass part. `Diapason´ is the name given to the register type which can have both principal character and ''Gedackt'' sound. In the original the suspended notes are limited to "tr." and an (unspecified) oblique "=" above a note. In the latter case, they are replaced here by alternative characters that appear to be appropriate.
